This comprehensive tour introduces you to Armenia’s rich spiritual and architectural heritage — from the pagan era to the rise of Christianity.
Garni Temple (1st century AD)
The only preserved pagan temple in the post-Soviet region, dedicated to Mihr, the god of the sun. Standing on a cliff overlooking the Azat Gorge, it’s a masterpiece of Hellenistic architecture. Nearby, you’ll find ancient Roman-style baths with mosaic floors made from over 30,000 natural stones.
Geghard Monastery & Symphony of Stones
A 13th-century monastery partly carved into the rock, listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site. “Geghard” means “the spear,” referring to the Holy Lance that, according to legend, pierced Christ’s body and was once kept here. The rock-cut architecture seamlessly blends with nature.
Just below the monastery lies the Symphony of Stones, a natural wonder — towering basalt columns that resemble organ pipes.
Khor Virap Monastery
Located just an hour from Yerevan, this monastery offers the most iconic view of Mount Ararat. The name means “deep dungeon,” as Saint Gregory the Illuminator, the first Catholicos of Armenia, was imprisoned here for 13 years. It’s one of the most visited holy sites in the country and the closest point to Ararat.
Etchmiadzin Cathedral – The Spiritual Center of Armenia
Built between 301–304 AD, Etchmiadzin is considered the world’s first Christian cathedral. According to legend, Christ descended from heaven and indicated the exact place where it should be built. Inside, a small museum houses sacred relics — fragments of the Holy Cross, Noah’s Ark, and the Spear of Destiny.
Churches of St. Hripsime and St. Gayane
The Church of St. Hripsime (618 AD) was built over the tomb of a Christian martyr who fled the Roman Empire and was killed in Armenia. It is one of the oldest standing churches in the world. Just five minutes away stands St. Gayane Church (7th century), renowned for its elegant proportions and spiritual serenity.
Zvartnots Temple (7th century)
The tour ends with a visit to the Zvartnots Cathedral, a 7th-century masterpiece included in the UNESCO World Heritage list. Its ruins still evoke the grandeur of ancient Armenian architecture.
