Haghpat monastery-Sanahin monastery
On this tour, you will head northeast to Lori, one of Armenia’s most picturesque regions, known for its lush green mountains and breathtaking landscapes.
Here you will explore two medieval masterpieces of Armenian architecture – Haghpat and Sanahin Monasteries, both listed as UNESCO World Heritage Sites. The two complexes are located just 20 minutes apart. The name Sanahin literally means “this one is older than the other,” while Haghpat translates as “thick wall,” symbolizing strength and endurance.
The main churches of both monasteries were built by the order of Queen Khosrovanush for her sons, Princes Smbat and Kyurike (Gurgen). Their bas-relief can still be seen beneath the eastern façade of the church. Haghpat’s main church, Surb Nshan, was completed in 976, while Sanahin’s was constructed about 30 years earlier.
