Haghpat and Sanahin Monastic Complexes – Akhtala Monastery – Dsegh Village

During this tour, you’ll travel to the northeast of Armenia — to one of its most picturesque regions, Lori Province.

Haghpat and Sanahin
These two closely connected monasteries, just 20 minutes apart, are both listed as UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
The name Sanahin literally means “this one is older,” while Haghpat means “solid wall” or “strong fence.” The main churches of both monasteries were built by Queen Khosrovanush for her sons, Kings Smbat and Kyurike (Gurgen). On the eastern façade, you can see a relief depicting the royal brothers.
Haghpat’s main church, Surb Nshan, was built in 976 AD, while Sanahin’s main church predates it by about 30 years.

Akhtala
You’ll also visit the 10th-century Akhtala Monastery, located within one of Armenia’s best-preserved fortresses. It is famous for its stunning medieval frescoes. According to tradition, the cross with which John the Baptist baptized Jesus Christ was once kept here.

Dsegh
The village of Dsegh, one of the most scenic in Lori, is the birthplace of Armenia’s beloved poet Hovhannes Tumanyan. His house-museum offers an intimate look into the poet’s life, works, and everyday environment, as it was once his actual home.
