Just about an hour’s drive from Yerevan lies Khor Virap Monastery, offering one of the most iconic views of Armenia’s national symbol – Mount Ararat. The name “Khor Virap” translates as “deep dungeon,” as the monastery was built on the site of a former royal prison. It was here that Gregory the Illuminator, the first Catholicos of Armenia, was imprisoned for 13 years. Today, this site is the closest point to Mount Ararat and often the very reason travelers choose to visit Armenia.
Another must-see destination is Noravank Monastery. A masterpiece of medieval Armenian architecture, it is nestled at the end of the stunning Gnishik Gorge, surrounded by towering red cliffs. Here you can admire the remarkable sculpture of God the Father, as well as the relief of Jesus Christ above the entrance of the upper church. Built by the noble Orbelyan family, the complex also served as their burial place – a unique feature, as burials within church grounds were strictly forbidden in Armenia since the 5th century.
